Cheer me up. This is relevant because I have kids, and they tire me, make me poor, and keep me from being a drunken slut like any other self respecting 24 year old would be!

No Clean Feed - Stop Internet Censorship in Australia

As internet users, I figured [info]brisneyland would be just as upset as I am at this proposed "Clean Feed". I have found this site that has an online petition and a letter template to send to Senator Conroy, making it very very easy to get your important opinions heard.

Please take five minutes out of your day and send some feedback to the government on this issue. Every little bit counts.

New shoes and New PR!

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 12:09 AM
So. The treadmills are broken at the weight room at my appartment complex. Well, one of the three works but it doesn't make it easy for 2 roommates to go running together on them. So I ended up going 5 miles on the bike, 1 mile on the eliptical, and then I got a new PR of 7 min 15 sec for one mile on the treadmill. I was excited about that but I definitly had wheezing afterwards. I think part of it may be that I didn't really have a cooldown after that mile. And because it was the fastest mile I've ever run...yeah. I also lifted weights...but mostly just did the weights for my legs. It was a good workout overall though. A good variety.

And I tried out my new running shoes my mom bought me for christmas because my feet have been killing me lately and I took at least a week off from running. I never realized how expensive running is when you are supposed to replace your shoes at least every 450 miles you run and really more frequently than that. That's at least 3 shoes per year. I'm glad I went to the 3 rivers running company because I knew I was overpronated (despite having moderatly high arches) but I'm actually only overpronated in one leg and reglar pronated in the other. Weird but it explains why one foot has been killing me and the other hasn't really been bothering me. I push off hard with my big toe and that ball of my foot just on the right side. It's been bugging me ever since my second half marathon and that was a month ago now. I was pretty worried about my food since I've only been running for a year and don't knwo all the ends and outs about it. I mean, I just figured a person's feet really hurt after a mini marathon but when my friend said hers hardly hurt at all I knew that there was a problem.

For those of you following an alternate vaccine schedule...do you constantly get lectured by your child's pediatrician?
I'm thinking of changing doctors because of this! My 2 yr old son is only missing 3 shots from the AAP guidelines, and she is acting like it's a huge deal.

Aust Post Strike = free mail

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 1:08 PM
Hi all,

Is it true, that the Australia Post strike that is occurring right now, has allowed the delivery of "free mail"?

Basically all standard greeting cards this season within Australia will be delivered free.

Could someone confirm?

Thank you.

I'm ITBS girl.

Yep, I christened myself that. Question for those of you coming back from an injury, especially ITBS. How often should I try to run to see if the ITBS has subsided?

I have taken six weeks off now, give or take, going to the gym instead of running. I miss running. I miss it terribly and want to get back into it. However, my ITBS flaired up ridiculously bad at my last half marathon in October and I'm scared. What kind of run should I do to assess accurately my recovery process? Should I try to run once a week to see if it's getting better?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Another rough day...

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 7:42 PM
I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement on my earlier post. Today I went out there and tried again... this time on the road... and sad to say, I felt terrible. After a mile I was nauseous and felt like my first day ever ever running... at this point, I'm thinking I must be coming down with a tummy virus or something. Anyhow, I tried, walked for a bit, ran for a bit, got about 30-45 mins in and called it a day. Tomorrow I'll try again. On the brighter side... I did take advantage of the Garmin 305 offer on amazon! Hope everyone had a great day.

Where can I find aviator sunglasses? Preferable in either the city or one of the major shopping centres, Chermside, Garden City, Indro, etc.

Picture under cut if you don't know what I'm talking about )

I can't afford actual brand name ones, so cheap knockoff recommendations would be best! Is there a dinky stall with random chinese knockoffs or anything like that? I thought about checking out St Vinnie's and the like but I heard something that they can't sell sunglasses anymore if they don't have a UV ray sticker or whatever it is on them, is this true?

Thankyou for any help!

fever/tylenol question

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 6:07 PM
Do any of you have kids that don't seem to really respond to Tylenol? My niece, 21 months, is sick again with a fever. Last night it was 104 axillary (so really 105) and they gave her a tepid bath to bring it down to 102 and then gave fever reducers. With K, though, the Tylenol NEVER touches it. When I was on the phone with my sister this afternoon, her fever was creeping back up. K had gotten her Tylenol at 130pm. My sister called me around 2ish and by 215, her fever was raging again and it was still 45 minutes before she was due for the Motrin. Normally, it's not a huge deal, but this time around her fever keeps creeping back to 104-105. They were at the doctor this morning and her ears are clear, her lungs are clear, the rapid strep came back negative, and she's not exhibiting any other signs of a possible UTI, but they sent off a urine anyway.

If your kid has been like this, what did you do in that interim? Like I said, usually it's not a big deal and she can hang out at 101-102 until it's time for Motrin, but 104-105 is getting into seizure territory so they don't want her to be at that temp for very long. Any suggestions?

Race Report - LA County Half Marathon 12/13

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 12:36 PM
I signed up for the inaugural LA County Half Marathon last month to get back on track after a slow running year (injury in March sidetracked me a lot!). I had a relatively short timeline in which to train, but I'm pretty quick at getting back up to an okay half marathon performance as long as I've been running at least 10 miles a week consistently. This was going to be the first race where I actually knew someone else who was running it too! My coworker, who got inspired by my running, was going to do it, and at the time I signed up, my old friend from elementary school was as well!

I was really looking forward to this race because it passed through some of my old high school cross country stomping grounds - a park where I'd gotten my best ever cross country PR (race completed with an EPIC bloody nose that showed up really well all over my white and lavender uniform)!

Okay, okay, I'll cut to save your friends page! )

So, positive notes about how wonderfully the inaugural race was put on, as well as the well organized parking and race start:
- The mile markers were the most accurate I've encountered
- There were water/powerade stops where they said they'd be!
- There were bathrooms every mile, and since we were in the park, many of them were real flushing toilets. When those weren't available, there were portapotties with no lines!
- The course was clearly marked and every switch off had someone standing there making sure you went the right way.
- On some of the steeper downhills, with wet ground, there were volunteers standing there to warn you of slippery turns ahead. And med golf carts waiting nearby just in case!
- Signs for dips in the road, etc. were out for the bike tour people who'd started before us!

It really was a lovely run. Once I got over my initial disappointment, I loved it! I will definitely be doing this one next year!

Total ascent/descent: 2500 ft. My splits were in the 8:50-9:10 range until mile 9 where the leg acted up and I started getting above 10 minute miles. Average pace 9:42.

Toddler back carry help plz?

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 1:23 PM
My son is currently 21 months old and weighs 27-28 pounds. I've been wearing him his entire life, but less so lately because he's too heavy for a front carry (in a Beco) for any length of time, and I can't for the life of me get him on my back without assistance.

I have watched the videos that suggest you start with them in the front, then take off the shoulder straps, shift them to your hip, and then place the opposite arm through the strap behind you. That is the part I just can't seem to manage without feeling like I'm going to drop my son! If I have a spotter who can hang onto him, it's okay, but that means when it's just him and me I'm sort of stuck.

Do I just need more practice, or are there other ways to get a toddler on your back in a Beco? You know, in a busy parking lot, that sort of thing?

ETA: Thanks, everyone! We went to the mall tonight and I was able to get him on and off my back successfully. I've missed wearing him when it was just him and me, and it was really awesome to be able to chat with him constantly while shopping. SO happy to be BWing again! :-D

Because I know this community LOVES follow-ups :)

http://community.livejournal.com/parenting101/5228311.html

We have the start of teeth now! Not-so-good picture and not-so-good picture with the areas circled. They're much easier to see in person.

So she went from the first onset of swollen gums to them barely poking through in about 2 1/2 weeks. Now what? How long did it take for your kids teeth to actually come out the rest of the way and look like teeth?

Taking the temperature of a tantrumy Toddler

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 10:05 AM
I think my son is running a slight fever, but I can't really check. He HATES having his temperature taken. I try to take an underarm temerature, but he starts screaming and wailing and gets really squirmy (and now he can just RUN AWAY!). I think he thinks it will hurt, even though I tried to show him on myself that it's OK.

We only have the one thermometer, which Hubby and I use the regular way (oral), so a rectal temp is out of the question (and if he objects so strongly to underarm, I think taking a rectal temp will just about kill him). He's too small to take an oral temp (21 months). Trying to take his temp when he's sleeping just wakes him up.

How good are those ear thermometers? Are they pretty fast? Would they "hurt" him, or scare him somehow? I know they aren't as accurate as an underarm or oral temperature, but are there brands that are more reliable than others?

Broskis TUESDAILIES!

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Good morning runners! Here's the daily training thread!

I'm pretty exhausted today. Not from getting my butt kicked bowling with [info]hbfs, [info]jakshadows, & [info]perfectstormpsu, but from not getting anywhere close to a full night of sleep since about December 4th. So I'm headed to get something to eat, then probably a bit of a nap. This afternoon [info]hbfs are headed to Valley Forge to run some hills for about an hour again. Might also lift again, I realized I missed that more than I thought yesterday.

So what is everyone else up to today, training and otherwise?

Question! Tell me about your most interesting/fun/exciting/adventurous date experience.

Discuss... and HAPPY RUNNING!

Black beans.

My 7.5 moth old LOVES them, particularly stewed with mexican seasoning.

However, eating them three meals in a row (we had lots of leftovers that I was eating for those same meals) is not recommended from a diaper perspective.

Ugh!

Clothing brands for tall, skinny boys?

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 6:56 AM
My 3 year old has outgrown the sleeves on his 4T long-sleeved shirts. His 5T shirts are all huge in the neck and body. What's your favorite brand for a kid who appears to be following in his dad's 37" sleeve armholes? (Try finding medium extra-tall anywhere. They don't even carry it in stock at the Big & Tall stores.)

I've had decent luck with Macy's Greendog brand in the past, but their selection isn't great. Target seems to be really hit or miss. Hanna Andersson and Old Navy are very "generous" in the body. Gymboree seems particularly short in the sleeve.

As you can see above, I'm not brand-loyal and don't care whether the brand is high-end or low-end, as long as it fits.

Please help! He's power-eating for another spurt of growth spurts! In the spring he had 3 growth spurts in 8 weeks, and grew two inches over the course of 8 weeks. Seriously. We measured.

ETA: Pants are not an issue as the kid still wears diapers and I've been able to find pants that have elastic waists. So the 5T pants aren't falling off his waist.

This made me think of you!

What's the worst Christmas (or Hanukkuh or birthday) gift you've ever gotten?

I once got a bathmat. Just... a bathmat. There was no special reason behind it. I hadn't just moved. It wasn't part of a larger gift or a stocking stuffer or a "Hey, I noticed you needed a new bathmat," from Mom. Just a gift someone thought would be a good idea. After the initial WTF moment, I thought it was hilarious, and I am, in fact using it. However, I still think it qualifies as the worst gift ever.
